How it works

Set up in three steps.

It takes a few minutes, and only the last step writes anything to your store.

  1. Install from the Shopify App Store

Retrace connects through Shopify and queues its first backup the moment you install. There is nothing to configure.

  2. Backups run, changes are tracked

Scheduled daily while the connection to Shopify is healthy, or on demand whenever you want one. Product changes are saved in seconds; everything else on the next backup.

  3. Restore what matters

Pick a version and see the before-and-after differences. Nothing is written until you confirm the preview, and you can walk away instead.

What's saved

Everything your store is made of.

The supported store data Retrace backs up, as the Backups screen offers it. The tag on each says what a restore can do about it.

Backups and change history

Automated scheduled backups, and one whenever you ask.

On a schedule, or on demand in one press

Scheduled backups run daily while the connection to Shopify is healthy, and Back up now saves the whole store on demand. The Backups screen says when a run was missed rather than leaving a silent gap.

Product changes saved in seconds

Shopify tells Retrace the moment a product changes, so the edit is saved without waiting for the next scheduled run. Everything else is captured on that run.

Version history you can read, not just restore

Saved versions stack up by day, and the Changes screen tracks what moved across products, themes, pages and menus. Recovery means choosing the morning before the change rather than hoping the last backup predates it.

Selective restore

Put back one product, not the whole store.

Undo one change without rolling back unrelated data

Tick a whole kind, such as products, or open it and pick the handful that went wrong. Anything left unticked is not touched, so the rest of your store keeps today's work.

Before-and-after differences, previewed first

Retrace compares the saved version against your store as it stands and shows what was there before beside what is there now. The restore runs when you confirm that screen, and not before.

Honest about what it cannot write back

Some things Shopify does not let any app rewrite. Retrace saves them so you can read, compare and export them, and says so on the card rather than failing halfway through a restore.

How quickly are changes captured?

Product changes within seconds. Everything else on your backup schedule.

Pages, blogs, menus and collection rules are saved by the scheduled backup, so how often that runs is the real guarantee. Inside the app, Backup checks shows the state of every kind of data.

What can Retrace put back?

Products, collections, pages, blogs, blog posts, navigation menus and custom content entries, always previewed first.

Products go back field by field, images included. So can theme files and theme settings, once Shopify grants the app permission to write themes. Stock levels and store settings are never written back: the first would undo real sales, and Shopify lets no app change the second. What never comes back, and why

What about orders and customers?

Orders are saved to read, never restored. Customers await Shopify approval.

Recreating a deleted order would invent a financial record that never happened, so orders are kept for reference and export only. Customers are saved once Shopify approves this app's protected data request; until then nothing is stored, and the app says so rather than showing a zero.

Is my data secure?

Encrypted with a key that belongs to your store alone.

Nobody, including other stores using Retrace, can read your data without your store's key. You sign in with Shopify, so Retrace never sees a password either.

What happens if I uninstall?

Your history is kept, so reinstalling picks up where you left off.

If you want it gone instead, full erasure follows Shopify's GDPR process automatically.
